Massaboden Substation Open-air Switchyard, Partial Renewal of the Substation

Massaboden Substation is an outdoor  11/15/66/132 kV switchyard with 3 outdoor transformers which supplies the catenary lines of the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) and the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn MGB.

The outdoor facilities consist of the following underground constructions:

  • Transformers: 3 oil collection vats for in-situ concrete transformers, 2  pump shafts with mineral oil separator
  • Switchgear: individual foundation for the open-air switchgear
  • High frameworks: individual foundations for high frameworks and mast construction
  • Approach tracks: concreted platform for delivery of transformer with a track width of 1435 mm or according to specifications of supplier, incl. lateral exits to the Transformer trays with a width of 1720 mm or according to supplier specifications
  • Fencing: Wire mesh fence on  end-to-end concrete wall

The partial renewal consists of the following:

  • Extension of the open-air switchgear
  • Demolition of certain parts of the substation (foundations, open-air switchgear)
  • Construction of new foundations and extension of the facilities
  • The surface will be completely replaced where construction work is carried out
  • A new drainage concept has to be developed and implemented
