Revitalisation and Fish Migration

The natural landscapes of streams and rivers are hotspots of species diversity, provide recreation areas for people, improve the microclimate and not least can contribute to flood defences. To ensure that our streams and rivers can fulfil these important tasks, existing watercourses have increasingly been revitalised in recent times.
IUB Engineering AG stands for pioneering revitalisation projects which provide people with space for relaxation and the inhabitants of the rivers with a suitable habitat, even in this period of climate change. Our preferred building materials are deadwood and living plants, which provide shade for the streams and rivers and keep them cool. Dynamic low water channels and scours also provide important retreats for fish and invertebrates, including in dry periods.
Further Information
To ensure that revitalisation projects achieve the desired effect, and animals and plants can complete their lifecycles, watercourse systems have to be interconnected. Fish migration in particular is often interrupted, however, by obstacles such as weirs, or hydroelectric stations. To restore free fish migration, we dismantle the obstacles to their migration, design them to allow fish to pass through or add aids to fish migration (fish ladders).
IUB Engineering AG stands for effective, ecologically sound and practical solutions to restore the ability of fish to migrate freely on major and minor watercourses. Our presence on national and international committees, and our extensive dialogue with research institutions ensure that we make a decisive contribution to further developments in this field.
