Restoration of Fish Migration

For restoration measures to have the desired effect and for aquatic animals and plants to complete their life cycle, river systems must be interconnected. Fish migration in particular is often interrupted by obstacles such as weirs, sills and hydropower plants. To restore free fish migration, we remove fish migration barriers or equip them with fish migration facilities for up- and for downstream migration.

We are committed to finding ecologically effective and practical solutions to restore free fish migration in small and large watercourses up to the Upper Rhine. Through our involvement in national and international committees and our close collaboration with research institutions, we make a significant contribution to the further development of this topic.

We support power plant operators and authorities in the planning of fish migration facilities as part of the remediation obligation stipulated by the Swiss Water Protection Act and offer services from feasibility study to commissioning. Since 2022, we have also been supporting the Federal Office for the Environment in the technical assessment of fish migration projects as part of an expert mandate.

For the restoration of non-hydropower plant-related obstacles, we join forces with our river restoration department in order to meet all habitat and fish passage requirements.
