Second Gotthard Tunnel, breakthrough in the northern fault zone

Wednesday, 29. April 2026

After 14 months and approximately 3,200 metres of tunnelling through the Aare granite and the southern gneiss zone, the tunnel boring machine ‘Alessandra’ reached the northern fault zone on 29 April 2026. The entry into the fault zone, which had already been excavated, was duly celebrated on site. In his speech, Jürg Röthlisberger, Director of the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO), paid tribute to the efforts of everyone involved in the project and congratulated them on reaching another milestone in the Gotthard Second Tube project. Over the next three months, the TBM will be moved through the fault zone before tackling the next 3.5 km to the contract boundary. In our capacity as Construction Management North, we wish the secondo tubo consortium continued success and good luck!
